City officials in Silverthorne, Colorado, are having a hard time reaching an agreement with local Save-o-Mat gas station owner, Buzz Calkins. Everyone agrees that something must be done about the condition of his leaky underground gas tanks, but so far, they have not found an agreeable solution. The site was tested in 2009 and found contaminated with benzene, a known carcinogen.
Local citizens are concerned. To date, the local groundwater remains uncontaminated, but officials say it is only a matter of time. City officials want a complete package including remediation and beautification of the gas station itself. They want the owner, who owns a total of 50 stations, to take responsibility and see him as unwilling. After 18 months of discussion, the city is considering its options, including revoking Calkin’s license for noncompliance.
