Volkswagen Group of America (VW) announced on April 25, 2018 they will recall more than 7,000 recently-built vehicles containing poorly welded shock absorbers.
The Auburn Hills-based manufacturer sent a recall report to the NHTSA on April 25, 2018 they will recall 7,049 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles built between Jan. 15 and March 6, 2018 at the company’s plant in Puebla, Mexico.

The affected vehicles contain rear shock absorbers that can separate from their bases because of an incorrect supplier welding process. A detaching shock absorber can drastically increase crash risk with no warning.
Volkswagen’s recall chronology stated inspectors first started noticing incorrect welding at a company internal test track between Feb. 19 and March 3, 2018. They began analyzing the root cause, eventually presenting their findings before the Volkswagen Mexico Pre-Product Safety Committee on March 26, 2018. Volkswagen AG and Volkswagen Mexico’s Product Safety Committees determined a defect existed and decided on April 18, 2018 to conduct a safety recall.
Volkswagen will notify owners and dealers will inspect the rear shock absorbers, replacing them as necessary free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 25, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 42i7. Concerned consumers can also visit the NHTSA’s website and enter their VIN to see if their vehicle is included in any recalls.
Your vehicle’s manufacturer is legally required to fix any recalled problems for free. If the dealership refuses to fix the part or tries to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately. The Highway Safety Act of 1970, which created the NHTSA, requires car manufacturers to pay for the recall and replacement of a defective part.
