Cancer Survivor Warns of Toxic Benzene Emissions from Asphalt Plants

Janet Edwards, a resident of Millville, New Jersey, wrote an impassioned letter to her mayor and city commissioners imploring they consider the harmful effects a proposed asphalt plant could have on the health of the city’s citizens. She explained her diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia, her treatment, and the recovery process she is still enduring.

The specific concern of Ms. Edwards is that asphalt plants all produce benzene as a byproduct of the production process. Benzene is a known carcinogen that has been linked to the development of leukemia. The commissioners and mayor are asked to consider the cost of a healthy life in relationship to the potential benefits of adding a new business to the community.
