The Torrance, California-based manufacturer sent the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) a safety recall notice stating they will recall 232,140 2018 Honda Accord and 2019 Honda Insight vehicles built from Oct. 24, 2017 to Sept. 4, 2018.

The affected vehicles contain back-up camera displays that can fail and not accurately display rearview images. This decreases rear visibility and increases crash risk, while also throwing the vehicle out of compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

The manufacturer’s recall chronology states engineers first noticed a trend in November 2017 and began evaluating back-up camera malfunction reports. Engineers eventually concluded in January 2018 faulty hardware caused the fault, but decided to keep monitoring reports. The company received 18 more claims in March 2018, with only three repairable with new hardware. Engineers determined defective software caused the remaining failures, prompting Honda to expand the investigation’s scope.

The supplier, Panasonic Automotive Systems of Dublin, Ohio, pinpointed the software problem in July 2018. Honda then conducted more testing to determined federal noncompliance and the affected vehicle range, eventually deciding on Sept. 6, 2018 to conduct a safety recall.

Honda will notify owners and dealers will reprogram the display audio unit software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin Nov. 5, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s numbers for this recall are K2G and V2F. Honda consumers can also visit the NHTSA’s website, and enter their VIN to see if their vehicle is included in any recalls.

Your vehicle’s manufacturer is legally required to fix any recalled problems for free. If the dealership refuses to fix the part or tries to charge you for the repair, contact the manufacturer immediately. The Highway Safety Act of 1970, which created the NHTSA, requires car manufacturers to pay for the recall and replacement of a defective part.

If the manufacturer fails to repair, replace, repurchase, or provide your recalled vehicle’s loss value, they are violating the warranty and a lawyer may be able to help you. Lemon law attorneys assist their clients by dealing directly with the manufacturer on the clients’ behalf, working to promptly resolve the issue and get their clients back on the road. Thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, attorneys can seek their fees directly from the manufacturer, meaning a client can obtain legal counsel without having to pay attorneys’ fees directly out of pocket.
