Home Inspector Warns That Asbestos May Still Lurk in Older Homes

Asbestos was commonly used in wall insulation in homes built prior to 1980, but was used in other parts of the home as well. Asbestos was commonly used in home and businesses as insulation for pipes and ceilings, as well as in materials such as drywall board, joint compounds, and roofing shingles. During the 1980s, the public became aware of the danger inhaled asbestos posed. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to a number of serious illnesses, including mesothelioma and other forms of cancer.

WH13, a home inspection company located in Alabama, advises people who live in homes built prior to the mid 1990s to have their homes inspected by a professional. If you are unsure whether or not the materials in your home contain asbestos, they should be left alone, as disturbing asbestos can cause it to become airborne more easily, which greatly increases the likelihood that it would be inhaled.
