Steve Underdown of Oregon is the owner of Bandon Golf Supply. He is also battling what is believed to be peritoneal mesothelioma. A benefit golf tournament held in late January raised $3,145 for Underdown and his family. There were 110 golfers involved in the tournament, and raffle tickets also contributed to the total money raised. Underdown has been unable to work due to his illness since November.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that attacks the lining of the abdomen. It is caused by asbestos exposure. Although the various forms of mesothelioma often come with a very poor prognosis, innovative types of cancer therapy that combine surgery with heated chemotherapy have been very successful for some patients with peritoneal mesothelioma.
