Wood Dust Exposure

The link between wood dust exposure and nasal cancer was initially discovered in the mid-1960s when health experts noticed that an inordinate number of English furniture factory workers were developing this extremely rare disease.  There have been many subsequent studies that have confirmed the link between wood dust exposure and Sinonasal cancer.

Studies completed in 1986 through 1988 and another study conducted in 1994 further confirms the initial study that linked hardwood and softwood wood dust exposure to Sinonasal cancer. In fact, the number of cases of nasal cancer seen in wood workers was 500 times greater than that seen in the general population. Sadly, nasal cancer can be fatal if not diagnosed and properly treated in its early stages.

What You Should Know

There are several different types of nasal cancer, some of which are more aggressive and thus have a poorer prognosis than others. Because the symptoms of nasal cancer are so similar to those associated with simple sinus infections, the disease is sometimes difficult to diagnose. Individuals with a history of wood dust or other occupational exposure who experience any of the following symptoms should consult with a physician as soon as possible:

  • Intermittent Nosebleeds
  • Chronic Nasal Discharge
  • Sinus Pain
  • Other Unusual Symptoms

As with all cancers, early diagnosis is imperative and is the best way to ensure the best possible prognosis. Although there is no cure for nasal cancer, treatment usually includes surgical excision of the tumor(s), radiation therapy, and in some cases, chemotherapy.
