Hiring a Gas Property Damage Attorney

Land-based oil and gas drilling companies have come under fire in a number of states recently for practices that cause health concerns and property damage to nearby residents. If your property has been damaged by oil or gas well drilling, or by the process known as fracking that forces a deadly chemical cocktail into the ground, you may need to seek the services of a qualified attorney. Here’s what you need to know.

Proving the relationship between drilling practices and damage to the environment, property, or health is difficult. You need an experienced attorney with extensive knowledge of this issue and the laws that may affect the outcome. The laws concerning how the oil and gas companies may differ in each state, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear. The oil and gas companies do not hesitate to ignore the few laws that are in place to ensure public safety.

In 2010, a Democratic Congressional committee set out to gather information about the process of fracking. Fracking is a process used by companies drilling for oil and natural gas that has sparked a national controversy. The findings were alarming. In 2005, legislation was introduced that exempted oil and gas companies from revealing the chemical makeup of fracking liquid. There was only one exception, diesel fuel. Any company that wished to include diesel fuel in fracking liquid was required to obtain a permit. The committee, comprised of Congress Representatives Henry Waxman of California, Edward Markey of Massachusetts, and Diana DeGette of Colorado, sent inquiries to fourteen companies. Of the 14, 12 companies voluntarily admitted to using diesel fuel in their fracking fluids. None of the companies had applied for a permit in any state.

The drilling companies argue that no link exists between fracking and the environmental issues coming to light in heavily fracked areas, like well water so contaminated with methane gas that you can set it on fire. An increasing number of lawsuits filed against drilling companies across the nation indicate that the public just isn’t buying it anymore.
