Diabetes Drug Actos and Bladder Cancer

DIABETES DRUG ACTOS AND BLADDER CANCER: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Actos (pioglitazone) is a prescription medication for treating type 2 diabetes that in recent years became one of the top-selling drugs in the U.S. But its popularity may have come at a high price: multiple studies show that Actos may cause bladder cancer in the very patients that the drug is supposed to help.

In June 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned that Actos and its sister drugs Actoplus Met, Actoplus Met RX, and Duetact can cause bladder cancer, especially in patients who have taken the drug for more than a year. In Europe (where the drug is called Glustin), Actos has been banned in France and is not prescribed to new patients in Germany because of the bladder cancer risk.

If you have type 2 diabetes and have taken Actos to control your blood sugar, talk to your doctor about the risk of bladder cancer–particularly if you experience any symptoms of bladder cancer or have had the disease in the past.

If you develop bladder cancer caused by Actos, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. Our team of attorneys at Allen Stewart, P.C. can help. We have a solid track record in representing people injured by toxic substances and have helped hundreds of diabetes patients injured by prescription drugs to receive the compensation they deserve.
